4 Root Canal Myths (& The Truth Behind Them)

Root canals are one of the most talked about dental treatments, largely because they are so feared. However, many patients who struggle with dental-related anxiety are surprised to hear that what they’ve heard about this procedure is actually untrue. With this in mind, keep reading to learn the truth behind these four root canal myths!

Myth #1: Root Canals Hurt

One of the most prevalent myths is that root canal therapy hurts. The reality is that the infection can lead to considerable discomfort, and this restorative dental treatment can eliminate it, alleviating any pain you’ve been experiencing in the process. Plus, your mouth will be numb for the procedure, so you won’t feel any pain as your dentist works to restore the look, health, and function of your tooth.

Myth #2: You Should Have Your Tooth Removed Instead

Another common myth is that it’s better to have your tooth removed instead because it’s cheaper. That’s usually not the case. After all, you must consider both the cost of the procedure and the cost of replacing your tooth. Plus, cost aside, the goal is to save your natural teeth whenever possible.

Myth #3: If Your Toothache Goes Away, You Don’t Need a Root Canal

Remember, pain isn’t the only symptom of a badly damaged tooth. In fact, it’s very common for the infection to “kill” the nerve when patients opt for the “wait and see” approach. Although discomfort, sensitivity, soreness, and other abnormal symptoms may be gone, the root of the problem very much remains. So, even if your toothache goes away, don’t cancel or postpone your appointment.

Myth #4: Root Canals Can Make You Sick

This myth usually stems from research conducted in the 1920s. However, it was heavily contested then, the research was poorly designed, and the claims have been disproven several times over the last several decades. It’s unfortunate because the opposite is more likely: if you don’t get the dental care you need when you need it, both your oral and overall health could be negatively impacted.
