From Discomfort to Danger: The Risks of Ill-Fitted Dentures

Dentures are designed to restore your smile and improve your quality of life. However, when they don’t fit properly, they can do far more harm than good! In fact, ill-fitting dentures can pose serious risks that go beyond just discomfort. If ignored, these issues can even become life-threatening! But how is that possible? Continue reading to learn more about the dangers of ill-fitted dentures.

Common Issues with Ill-Fitting Dentures

When dentures don’t fit well, they can cause a range of uncomfortable issues:

  • Sore Spots and Ulcers: Dentures that rub against your gums can create sore spots and ulcers, leading to pain and irritation.
  • Difficulty Eating: If your prosthetics aren’t secure, chewing food becomes a challenge, which can limit your diet and lead to malnutrition.
  • Speech Problems: Loose denture appliances can make it difficult to speak clearly, which can be both frustrating and embarrassing.

While these issues are certainly inconvenient, the real danger comes when they’re ignored for too long.

How Do These Issues with Dentures Get Worse?

So, how do these relatively minor problems worsen into a life-threatening situation? Here’s what can happen:

Infection and Inflammation

Sore spots and ulcers caused by ill-fitted dentures can become infected if not treated properly. If the infection reaches the bloodstream, it can lead to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Pneumonia

One of the most serious risks associated with ill-fitting dentures is pneumonia. This is what happens when food, liquid, or saliva is inhaled into the lungs instead of being swallowed properly. This is even more likely if you sleep with your dentures in.

Oral Cancer

Yet another issue with ill-fitting dentures is the risk of developing oral cancer. Small gaps left around your teeth and gums can trap harmful chemicals, especially if you smoke, chew tobacco, or drink alcohol excessively. Over time, this can lead to the development of oral cancer which can be fatal if not caught quickly.

What to Do If Your Dentures Don’t Fit

If your dentures are causing discomfort or any of the issues mentioned above, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible. Adjustments or replacements can be made to ensure a better fit, reducing your risk of developing problems.

It can be frustrating to need to reline your prosthetics every now and then, no doubt. However, it’s a small price to pay compared to the harm these other conditions can inflict.

Ill-fitting dentures might start as a minor annoyance, but they can quickly turn into a serious health risk. By addressing issues early, you can prevent complications and ensure that your dentures work for you, not against you!
